In 1986, Mark E. Shepherd became permanently paralyzed from the waist down when his automobile flipped out of control.
Many of the hundreds of thousands who find themselves disabled yearly go on to live productive lives. But too many,
declares Shepherd, are lost in the negative statistics of the disabled who are waiting for someone to save them.
In Getting Back in the Game, he addresses those traumatically injured citizens who have become permanently disabled.
"My main purpose here is to share enough insight to help those in recovery," Shepherd declares. "In truth, the disabled
are generally too coddled and over protected. Consequently, few people will tell a person with disability the truth."
He hope to accomplish two very important goals in Getting Back in the Game.
First, Shepherd wants to remove the disabled from their apathetic cocoon. Secondly, he wants to provide real life
solutions that "few have the courage to impart."
By dealing with these two themes, he hopes that the disabled and their families will have a better idea of what
lies ahead in the world of disability.
Getting Back in the Game starts at the onset of disability and continues through the many stages of
physical recovery, physical rehabilitation, and emotional revitalization necessary to get on with life –-
to get back in the game.
